Why do some waves barrel but not others?
The science of why waves break as they do is determined by how the wave energy interacts with the bathymetry (sea bottom). For a wave to barrel, it must have high energy and release that energy with great force. This happens when the water depth changes from deep to shallow in a short distance.
Waves travel at a speed proportional to the depth of the water and the energy of the wave. The top of the wave is travelling fast as it comes out of deep water. The bottom of the wave slows down when it comes into shallow water, but the top of the wave keeps moving fast. This is what makes the wave barrel, i.e. the top of the wave is moving faster than the bottom when the wave breaks. An offshore wind helps to magnify the barrelling effect, as it holds up the top of the wave until it gets into shallower water, which means it breaks with more force. An onshore wind has the opposite effect, as it pushes the wave over and forces the top of the wave to break sooner.
Some of the Uluwatu surf spots near to us have excellent bathymetry, which allows the wave to barrel, i.e. the water depth changes quickly from deep to shallow water. Selecting the right spot at the right time is critically important, as the tidal depth works in conjunction with the wave energy. Which surf spot is best for barrel riding?
The Balinese pipeline is the Indonesian equivalent of Hawaii’s pipeline, but this is an expert-only wave. Much easier barrels can be had at Bingin and Dreamland. Impossibles and Balangan both occasionally throw barrels but are not consistent. Uluwatu throws barrels every day but is much more difficult than either Bingin or Dreamland. The end section of the Racetrack is possibly the hardest barrel to make (see photo), as it is always bumpy. There are easier sections at Uluwatu, and we know when and where.
How much do barrel riding coaching sessions cost?
Private surf lessons are available for £84 per person for 2 sessions a day, or £48 for 1 session, for guests who stay with Padang Padang Surf Camp (includes all equipment).
For non-residents, the prices are: £104 for 2 sessions (same day) or £64 for 1 session.
Semi-Private Surf Lessons (1 Instructor to 2 Students)
For groups of 2 and couples we provide semi-private surf lessons where you can learn together.
Semi-private lessons are available for £108 (£54 per person) for 2 sessions, or £60 (£30 per person) for 1 session, for guests who stay with Padang Padang Surf Camp.
For non-residents, the prices are: £127 for 2 sessions (same day) or £77 for 1 session.
