Tucked away along Bali’s southern coast, Thomas Beach is a semi-secret surf spot between world-famous Uluwatu and Padang Padang. Named after a local homestay perched above the middle of the beach, it offers uncrowded waves and a relaxed vibe — a favourite among surfers who want to escape the crowds of the main Bukit breaks. A little-known fact: this is the original Padang Padang Beach — Labuan Sait Beach further along has since taken over the name.

Understanding the Thomas Beach Wave

Thomas Beach is best known as a beginner-friendly surf spot, particularly at mid to high tide on a small to medium swell. Unlike the more advanced breaks around the corner — such as Uluwatu and Padang Padang, where waves peel in long organised lines — Thomas Beach waves tend to break more abruptly and uniformly across the reef, leaving little opportunity for long rides along the open face. This makes it less suitable for advanced surfers but an ideal training ground for beginners working on fundamentals.

The waves are well suited to practising paddling technique, pop-ups and functional stance. Soft tops and longboards perform especially well here — the extra volume helps maintain speed and stability in the white water, allowing learners to continue riding and begin developing basic steering through gentle carves left or right.

On smaller days at mid tide, the wave can occasionally offer short to medium-length lefts that provide a satisfying ride. For advanced surfers on shortboards, the wave will feel too fast and lack the shape needed for manoeuvres — especially given the world-class options available nearby.

What makes Thomas Beach genuinely appealing is its quietness. While more popular spots fill up when a swell hits, Thomas often stays uncrowded due to its more challenging access and stronger currents. For surfers building confidence who want space to practise without crowd pressure, it is a worthwhile option — even if the wave quality is less consistent than Baby Padang.

The Best Time to Surf Thomas Beach

Thomas Beach is best surfed on a small to medium swell at mid to high tide. At this size, the waves give a beginner surfer enough time to pop up, gain control and continue riding. On larger swells a strong current develops from big set waves breaking around the corner to the south at Uluwatu — head-high and below is the ideal size range. At low tide the reef becomes exposed and the waves break in water too shallow for safe surfing. At very high tide the waves become less frequent and the current can strengthen.

The dry season (April–October) is the best time to surf Thomas Beach. Consistent SE trade winds keep the waves clean and well-groomed throughout the day. In the wet season (November–March), winds tend to blow onshore, making conditions choppier. On those days, east-facing breaks around Nusa Dua are a better option.

How to Access Thomas Beach

Recent improvements have made reaching Thomas Beach much easier, with a well-maintained path from the cliff top. You can ride a motorbike until quite close to the beach, but cars need to be parked near the main road — it is not a long walk, but on a hot day with a beginner board it can feel like one. That said, the access challenge is part of what keeps the crowds down.

Its secluded location keeps Thomas Beach off the typical tourist radar. A large-scale villa complex is currently under construction on the cliffs overlooking the beach — this is expected to bring improved access and upgraded facilities, though it will inevitably change the character of the spot.

Can Beginners Surf Thomas Beach?

Yes — Thomas Beach is suitable for beginner surfers seeking a more relaxed, uncrowded experience. It is best surfed with an instructor who knows the currents and can advise on tide timing. Baby Padang is generally the better beginner option in the Uluwatu area — more consistent, with an easier channel paddle-out — but Thomas Beach is a good alternative on quieter days. Book a beginner surf lesson with us and we will take you to the right break for the conditions.

Can Intermediate Surfers Surf Thomas Beach?

Intermediate surfers can surf Thomas Beach but will find better waves nearby. Dreamland, Balangan and Toro Toro all offer longer, more rewarding waves for intermediates with a similar or better level of challenge. Join our intermediate surf program and we will guide you to the right break for your level every day.

Safety Tips for Surfing Thomas Beach

  • Currents: Be ready for strong currents, especially when the swell is bigger. Always use a leash and wear appropriate sun protection.
  • Paddle out: Approach cautiously, particularly on bigger swells. The current can sweep you into deeper water quickly if you are not watching your position relative to shore.
  • Wave selection: The inside sections offer the most manageable waves. Look for peeling lefts on mid tide rather than trying to surf the outer sections at low tide over exposed reef.
  • Tide awareness: Low tide exposes the reef and makes conditions unsafe. Always check the tide before paddling out.

What to Do at Thomas Beach for Non-Surfers

Thomas Beach is well known for its large natural tide pools that form at low tide. Crystal clear, big enough to swim in and filled with colourful marine life, they have become a social media highlight and one of the more unusual coastal experiences on the Bukit Peninsula. The beach itself is beautiful and quiet — a genuine alternative to the busier beaches further north. The walk to Uluwatu along the cliff path is spectacular.
