Just across the channel from the picture-perfect Sindhu Right lies its wilder, more temperamental sibling, Sindhu Left. Known by many names, Tanjung Sari Left, Magic Wave, or the local favourite Jantuk, this wave offers a rare opportunity in Sanur: a quality left-hander on a coastline dominated by rights.

Like its neighbour, it changes personality completely depending on the day. On a small high tide, it is a sunset paradise for local kids. But when a solid swell pulses, it transforms into a top-heavy, board-breaking barrel that demands expert skill.
Understanding the Sindhu Left wave
Locals call this wave Jantuk, which translates to “forehead” in the local dialect. One look at a set wave explains why: on a good day, the wave jacks up into a thick, top-heavy forehead of water before throwing a heavy, top-to-bottom barrel. It breaks a little farther out to sea than the right and is generally more fickle.
- The learning ground (small swell): On a small swell and a medium to high tide, Sindhu Left is a very short, easy wave. It serves as a playground for local kids and intermediates who are just learning to surf over a shallow reef without the consequence of heavy water.
- The barrel machine (powerful swell): When a powerful swell hits, the wave transforms completely. At any tide, it becomes a difficult, fast-moving barrel machine. This is a heavy, high-consequence wave that is known to crush bodies and boards, offering intense, top-to-bottom tubes for those with the skill to handle the drop. The lower the tide, the more intense the wave.
Best time and conditions at Sindhu Left
Sindhu Left is an intermittent gem that requires specific conditions to shine.
- Season: Like Sindhu Right, this is a wet-season wave best surfed with light north-west winds.
- Swell: It needs a solid swell to open up. If it is under head-high, it is fun but short. If it is pumping, it is a real board breaker.
- Tide:
- High tide (fun mode): On a powerful swell, the high tide keeps the wave throwing thick, chunky barrels while keeping you off the reef. On small swells, the high tide creates a fun, soft shoulder.
- Low tide (expert mode): On a powerful swell and low tide, this wave becomes sharp, shallow, fast, and powerful. Like the outside at Hyatt Reef, this mode is for experts and pros only.
Safety and dangers at Sindhu Left
Despite looking appealing from the beach, Sindhu Left has teeth.
- The reef: It remains extremely shallow, posing a constant risk of injury. The chance of hitting the reef here on larger days is high.
- Board breaking: When it is really on, the take-offs are steep and the barrels wide, making it a notorious spot for snapping surfboards.
- The paddle out: There are rocks sticking out of the water on the path to the lineup, even on a high tide.
Access to Sindhu Left
Access is slightly more difficult than Sindhu Right. While you launch from the same boardwalk area, the left breaks farther out. Unlike the easy channel paddle for the right, you often have to paddle over the reef to get to the left, navigating around rock outcrops.
Can beginners surf Sindhu Left?
No. Even though it looks close to shore, the reef is too shallow and the wave too intense for beginners. Beginners will find a much safer and more enjoyable experience at Baby Reef in Sanur or the gentle waves at Baby Padang in the Uluwatu area, where the crowds are manageable and the waves more predictable.
Is Sindhu Left good for intermediates?
Sort of, on the right day. During the wet season, when an under-head-high swell is running, this wave is a fun, short left-hander. It is great for intermediates who are learning to surf reef and want to escape the crowds. Because the wave is so short, it is often less crowded than other breaks in the Sanur area. With a local guide to handle the currents and boat logistics, Sanur Reef also becomes a fantastic intermediate option, but strictly on a high tide with a small swell.
Local amenities and vibe at Sindhu Left
Because Sindhu Left sits right across the channel from Sindhu Right, you get the same setup.
- The scene: The boardwalk is filled with cafes, relaxed vibes, and bicycle riders.
- The view: It is a lovely place to sit and watch the sunset, often with a view of Balinese kids ripping the inside section.
Is Sindhu Left worth surfing?
Sindhu Left is the Magic Wave for goofy-footers in Sanur. Whether you are an intermediate looking for a quiet shoulder on a small day, or an expert hunting a heavy Jantuk barrel on a big low tide, it offers a thrill that is hard to find on the east coast. The margin for error is small, though, so to avoid leaving your board, or your skin, on the reef, it is best to go with someone who knows the tides.
