Mengiat is located in the middle of Nusa Dua’s highly developed tourist zone, standing out for its easy access and clean environment: a flawless white-sand beach, manicured tropical gardens, and a very short walk from the car park to the water.

Download our free PDF guide to all 73 Bali surf spots to plan your trip around the right break for every tide, swell and wind.

Often described as a fickle wave, Mengiat is an A-frame reef break that can look perfect from the beach, even reminiscent of the Mentawais, but often falls short of expectations. It is a fast wave that is notoriously shifty and challenging to position for, yet it offers a fun setup for all skill levels when the conditions align.

Understanding Mengiat’s fickle A-frame

Mengiat is an A-frame reef break on the reef-lined Nusa Dua coast that offers both lefts and rights over a shallow reef. It is peaky and bowly, demanding that you get to your feet quickly and have your positioning nailed.

  • The left-hander (better side): Generally the better and more user-friendly side of the peak, especially for intermediates. It breaks into a deep-water channel that makes for the easiest paddle out and the easiest place to reposition, and it often features a fun bowl on the end section.
  • The right-hander (more difficult): The right is typically harder to surf and takes more effort to stay in position, due to a current running down from Geger.
  • The challenge: While the wave looks flawless from the shore, it is often fast and short, and the shifting peak makes getting into the right spot a constant challenge. You will find better waves at the longer walls of Chicken Wings if you jump on one of the boats that operate from Mengiat beach.

Finding the best conditions at Mengiat

Mengiat is a reliable Nusa Dua option, but as a fickle wave it demands the right combination of tide and swell to show its potential.

  • Ideal season: Like all Nusa Dua breaks, Mengiat works best during the wet season in the Bali surf calendar (November to March), when the prevailing winds blow offshore.
  • Ideal tide: The wave works best at mid to high tide.
  • Swell suitability: The wave caters to varying skill levels, depending on the size.
    • Small swell: Suitable for intermediate surfers, and the inside section can be manageable for beginners.
    • Overhead swell: The wave is only suitable for advanced surfers.

Key condition note: On larger days, the current becomes too strong and the take-offs too tricky for anyone without significant experience, regardless of the tide.

Dangers of surfing Mengiat

While the setting is pleasant, the wave itself presents specific hazards that surfers must respect.

  • Strong current: There is a noticeable current running, particularly on the right side of the peak (down from Geger), which adds to the difficulty of an already tricky take-off and makes staying in position hard.
  • Shallow reef: The wave breaks over a shallow reef.
  • Fickle nature: You may spend a long time battling the current and fighting for position only to find the waves are short and disappointing.

Our solution: Mengiat’s shifty peak and tricky current reward precision. Book a session of our advanced surf guiding to paddle out at the right moment, sit on the best peak, and save your energy for the ride.

Access: the easiest entry point in Bali

Mengiat is arguably one of the most pleasant and easiest spots to access in all of Bali.

  • Easy entry: The car park is reached via a manned gate, in an area surrounded by well-manicured tropical gardens, making it an oasis compared to the busy streets outside.
  • Short walk: It is a very short walk from the car park directly to the white-sand beach and the surf break.
  • Paddle out: The easiest paddle out is through the deep-water channel on the left-hand side of the peak.

Can beginners surf at Mengiat?

Yes, but only under specific conditions. On a small swell, the inside section at mid-tide can be manageable and suitable for beginners. On larger days, however, the current becomes too strong and the take-offs too tricky for anyone without experience.

Next step for beginners: Given the current and inconsistent conditions, we recommend beginners start with beginner surf lessons at a controlled spot like the gentler waves at Baby Padang to build the fundamentals before trying Mengiat.

Is Mengiat good for intermediate surfers?

Yes. Mengiat is a good choice for intermediate surfers on small swells. The better-quality left side breaks into the deep-water channel, which makes the paddle back out and repositioning much easier. It provides a striking setting and offers fun, short, punchy rides.

Eating and staying near Mengiat

Mengiat beach sits in the highly developed ITDC Nusa Dua tourist zone, with a full range of amenities. For somewhere to stay, the beach is surrounded by five-star resorts and hotels. For food, you will find everything from high-end resort dining to local warungs near the car park and beach.

What to do at Mengiat for non-surfers

  • The beach: Mengiat is a long, pristine white-sand beach, ideal for sunbathing and swimming in the calm water inside the reef.
  • The gardens: The well-manicured tropical gardens make for a pleasant, relaxing environment.

Is Mengiat worth surfing?

Mengiat offers an A-frame setup with one of the most pleasant access points in Bali. It is a fickle wave, best on a mid-to-high tide in the wet season, with good opportunities for intermediates on small swells and a challenge for advanced surfers when the swell is overhead.
