Located just north of popular Pantai Muaya, Lifeguard Hut is a small, rarely breaking peak that breaks directly in front of the lifeguard tower on Jimbaran beach.
Like its neighbour Ahimsa, this wave is rarely big enough to be surfed and requires a massive pulse of swell to show any life. When the conditions align, though, it becomes a fun, playful zone, often dominated by local kids making the most of the small conditions. Lifeguard Hut only wakes up a handful of days a year, so it pays to know the forecast — our free PDF guide to all 73 Bali surf spots covers Jimbaran’s breaks and every other wave in Bali, so you always know where to paddle out.
Understanding the Lifeguard Hut wave
While Pantai Muaya offers shaped lines, the waves here are less defined. It produces soft peaks that break both left and right. Even when the swell is massive, breaking on the outside of the bay, the waves here remain small, making it a novelty spot rather than a performance wave.
Best time and conditions at Lifeguard Hut
The key difference between Lifeguard Hut and the neighbouring spots is the tide. This spot works best at high tide — while Muaya and Ahimsa favour lower tides, Lifeguard Hut offers a surfable option when the tide fills in. It also needs a big swell to break; if it is not XXL at Uluwatu’s reef breaks, it will be flat here.
Access to Lifeguard Hut
Access is effortless. Simply walk down to Jimbaran beach and head north from the Four Seasons until you spot the lifeguard tower. The entry is a straightforward walk into the water over a sandy bottom.
Can beginners surf Lifeguard Hut?
Yes. Because the waves are always small and break softly, this is an okay spot for beginners. It offers a safe environment to practise standing up in the whitewater or catching gentle green waves without the fear of a heavy hold-down, and suits beginner surf lessons on a big-swell day.
Can intermediates surf Lifeguard Hut?
No. This wave is always too small for intermediate surfers. The lack of definition and power means there is little opportunity to generate speed or perform manoeuvres. If you are an intermediate surfer looking for a wave in Jimbaran, stick to the southern end at Muaya or head to Toro Toro’s soft peak at the Airport Reefs.
Local amenities near Lifeguard Hut
Jimbaran is famous for its luxury and its seafood, both of which are right on the doorstep of this break. The break sits directly in front of the Four Seasons Jimbaran, offering ultra-luxury accommodation, and for other budgets there are numerous guesthouses set back from the beach. Jimbaran Bay is world-famous for its seafood dinners on the beach, so after your surf you can walk north to the cluster of seafood warungs for fresh snapper or prawns as the sun sets.
Is Lifeguard Hut worth surfing?
Lifeguard Hut is not a destination you travel for; it is a spot of convenience. If you are staying nearby and the tide is high during a massive swell, it offers a quick, playful splash, perfect for a cool-down session or sharing a few small waves with the local groms, but do not expect world-class quality. The key to surfing Bali is finding the most appropriate break for your ability on any given day, and with so many spots in the area, that can be impossible to guess. When you are unsure where to go, rather than wasting time driving to a flat or dangerous spot, join our Uluwatu surf camp and we will take you directly to the right wave, whether it is a small beginner reform or a massive expert barrel.
