Airport Right sits just off the end of Bali’s international runway and is one of the standout waves within Bali’s Airport Reefs. It is a long, mechanical right-hander that breaks over sharp coral and delivers speed, power, and hollow sections when conditions align. Kelly Slater has called it his favourite wave in Bali, and many local surfers regard it as one of the best on its day. The lineup is competitive and crowded, with a mix of skilled locals, visiting pros, and intermediates pushing their limits, a true test of timing, positioning, and confidence.

Understanding the Airport Right wave
This wave is the bigger, meaner brother to Toro Toro, breaking farther out to sea, bigger, faster, and shallower. It breaks over a sharp coral reef that produces a fast, wrapping right-hander that changes character with the tide and swell size. It works best from mid to high tide, once there is enough water over the shallow end section to make it surfable, and continues to hold shape through even the highest tides.
On smaller swells, it is a playful and long-running wave that can peel for up to 200 metres with clean faces and open sections for turns. As the swell builds, the wave gains power and speed, throwing barrels and racy walls before finishing in a turbulent inside section. Missing a wave on bigger days can be punishing, as the inside water moves heavily against you, making the paddle back out a real workout. When it is well overhead, Airport Right turns into a serious wave, delivering deep barrels and powerful carve sections, but with the constant threat of the shallow reef near the end section. Because the break sits far offshore and is fully exposed to wind, clean mornings with light or no wind are essential; once the breeze picks up, the surface can become choppy quickly, making early sessions the best call.
Safety tips for surfing Airport Right
Airport Right demands awareness and respect. The reef is sharp and shallow, and wipeouts can lead to serious cuts or impact injuries, especially when the tide is too low and the end section becomes dangerously shallow. Crowds are another factor; the lineup often includes surfers of mixed ability, which can make positioning tricky and collisions more likely. Wear reef booties if you are not used to coral, keep clear of the boat drop-off zones, and avoid surfing when tide, swell, or wind conditions are not aligned. This is not a spot to push your limits; waiting for the right window of tide and wind is key to both performance and safety.
How to enter the surf at Airport Right
Access to Airport Right is only possible by boat. The most common way is to take the early-morning water taxis from Pantai Kedonganan in Jimbaran Bay or Pantai Jerman near Kuta Beach, where you will be dropped straight to the lineup. Paddling from shore is not advised: the distance is considerable, and the area is busy with boat traffic, making it both exhausting and unsafe.
How to exit the surf at Airport Right
When you are ready to exit, locate your boat and paddle over. Be patient if you need to wait for others to climb aboard. Once on board, relax and enjoy the view on the return trip to shore.
When is the best time to surf Airport Right?
The best time to surf Airport Right is in the early mornings during the dry season, from April to October. During these months, clean offshore winds and consistent Indian Ocean swells combine to produce the best waves. July and August can be tricky, though: the south-east trade winds are strongest then, often blowing hard even at sunrise and creating surface chop due to the reef’s exposed position. Because Airport Right sits far offshore with no cliffs or landmass for protection, even moderate wind can affect the lineup. While offshore winds are normally ideal, at Airport Right a strong offshore can blow directly into the face of the wave, creating bump and spray that make take-offs difficult. The transition months of April and October are the most reliable windows, when winds are light and the swell still consistent. During the wet season (November–March), westerly winds often blow onshore and swells are smaller, so quality surf days are less frequent, though on calm mornings there can be the occasional clean session.
Can beginners surf Airport Right?
Airport Right is not for beginners, due to its distance from shore and shallow reef. Beginner surfers will have a better experience at Kuta Beach, which breaks over sand, or the gentle waves at Baby Padang.
Can intermediates surf Airport Right?
Airport Right, along with Airport Left and Kuta Reef, is an OK wave for intermediate surfers. On below-head-high days, the friendly walls are great for working on your frontside top turns, backside top turns, cutbacks, bottom turns, and transitions between manoeuvres. Any bigger and the break becomes challenging, given the fast waves, shallow reef, and deadly end section.
Things to do at Airport Right for non-surfers
For non-surfers, the nearby Kedonganan fish market offers a local cultural experience. Alternatively, a stroll south along the beach towards Pantai Muaya is a relaxing way to enjoy the coastline.
Where to stay near Airport Right
While there are hotels lining Pantai Muaya and Ahimsa to the south, access to Airport Right is in a largely local neighbourhood with limited tourist infrastructure, nightlife, and dining. We recommend staying in Kuta (15 minutes away in early-morning traffic), Canggu (30 minutes), or Uluwatu (30 minutes) for a better selection of accommodation, dining, and entertainment.
Where to eat near Airport Right
There are several seafood restaurants along the beach at the south end of Jimbaran Bay, though post-morning surf options are very limited. Pantai Kelan, just north of Kedonganan, has become popular for its beachfront dining and views of planes landing at the airport. Every evening, seafood BBQs are set up on the beach, offering fresh fish and excellent sunset views.
Is Airport Right worth surfing?
Airport Right rewards precision and patience. When the wind is calm and the tide is right, it offers a fast, hollow wall that can rival Bali’s most famous reefs. But its distance from shore, shallow sections, and exposed position mean it is not a wave to take lightly. For confident surfers willing to time the conditions and make the boat trip out, Airport Right delivers one of Bali’s most thrilling and memorable rides.
