Dry Season (April-October)

While the crowds flock to the famous West Coast left-hander at Medewi, a diverse playground awaits just a few hundred metres down the beach. This stretch, known as Pulukan, offers a series of peaks that serve as the perfect complement to the main point. Pulukan is the kind of spot our free PDF guide to all 73 Bali surf spots was built for — it maps the tide, swell and wind for every break on this coast, and the rest of Bali besides.

Surfers in the know follow a simple drill: when the tide drops too low for the main point, you move down to Pulukan. With a mix of sand, rock, and cobblestones holding the banks in place, these waves are generally superior to the typical West Coast beach breaks like Kedungu or Pig Stone. They offer punchier walls and better shape, with plenty of rights and lefts on offer.

Understanding the Pulukan breaks

The Pulukan stretch covers several distinct setups, all offering something different depending on the day. Unlike true beach breaks, the bottom here is a mix of rock and cobblestone boulders, which helps define the peaks. To access these breaks, simply follow the road to the beach off Jl Loji II and paddle straight out through the channel in front of the bike parking, or walk along the beach to your preferred peak.

Medewi Right

Furthest west, breaking at the south end of the Medewi river mouth (opposite the famous Left), lies Medewi Right. This is a punchy, faster wave that offers a great alternative for regular footers when the swell picks up.

The Main Peaks

Located directly in front of the road where you park your motorbike, this is the main setup, featuring a consistent A-frame and a right-hander separated by a channel. It does not have the scary, dredging power of Yeh Gangga — you will not find crazy barrels here — but it is significantly more powerful than the soft Medewi Left. You can ride a shortboard here and still get a few good turn sections before the wave dies into deep water or closes out.

Pantai Pangkung Jukung (the southern ledge)

Located furthest south, this is a unique “sleeping giant.” It only wakes up when a huge southwest swell hits during the dry season — without a huge swell, the wave does not form. At its best, it lights up as a beautiful longboard left that offers incredibly long rides.

Best time and conditions at Pulukan

The strategic value of Pulukan lies in its relationship with the tide. Medewi Left is best on a mid-to-high tide; Pulukan is the opposite. It works on all tides but is best on a low tide — when the main point drains out, simply move down the beach to keep surfing. At high tide the waves still work but become much slower; you need a medium-sized swell to get the waves to break properly, otherwise they can be too soft.

At head-high, these peaks really switch on. Because of the rock bottom, they hold shape better than West Bali’s pure sand breaks. Anything bigger than overhead-and-a-half, and the peaks become a mess, turning into disorganised waves.

Safety and dangers at Pulukan

The biggest hazard here is the bottom. Because the beach is a mix of sand, rock, and cobblestone, you never quite know where a submerged boulder might be hiding, so tread carefully and fall shallow. Be aware of the water quality near the river mouth too, especially after rain.

Can beginners surf Pulukan?

Yes. On days when the waves are small, these peaks are fairly soft and suitable for beginners. The “fun” vibe of the area makes it a welcoming place to learn, provided you are mindful of the rocks on the inside, just like at Yeh Sumbul.

Can intermediates surf Pulukan?

Yes. This is an excellent playground for intermediates. The waves offer punchy sections for turns without the heavy consequences of Bali’s premier reefs. It is a great place to escape the crowds of the main point and Canggu and find a peak to yourself.

Local amenities and vibe near Pulukan

As always in the Medewi area, the vibe is light and fun; no one takes themselves too seriously here. It is a developing area that is getting busier as more surfers realise how wonderful the setup is. The immediate Pulukan stretch is beautiful but sparse, surrounded by rice fields with only a few basic homestays. For restaurants, surf shops, rentals, and lessons, you are just a stone’s throw from the main Medewi hub, which has everything you need.

Why Pulukan is the West Coast’s unsung hero

Pulukan is the unsung hero of the West Coast. Better than a beach break but friendlier than a heavy reef, it saves the day when the tide drops or the main point gets too crowded.

Whether you are hunting the rare longboard left at Pangkung Jukung or hacking the A-frame at the main parking, this stretch adds a whole new dimension to a Medewi trip.
