While the Uluwatu area steals the limelight for high-performance waves, Sanur offers a gentler, more relaxed pace. Baby Reef is a standout gem in this area, a beginner-friendly reef break located approximately 700 metres offshore.

Offering a controlled and protected environment, it is arguably the favourite spot in Bali for longboarders and developing surfers who want long, small waves without the stress of a heavy lineup. Accessible only by boat, it provides a classic Balinese surfing experience with views back towards the Sanur coastline.
Understanding the Baby Reef wave
Baby Reef is defined by its sheltered nature. The break is protected from the direct impact of the Indian Ocean swell by the outer reefs of Serangan and Nusa Dua. This filter turns raw energy into soft, manageable waves. The wave itself consists of various peaks that break very slowly, offering both lefts and rights.
- The inside section: Here the waves are smaller and gentler, perfect for those with a little experience who want to build confidence.
- The outside section: Surfers with a bit more experience can head further out to catch the bigger green waves that offer longer rides.
Best time and conditions at Baby Reef
Unlike the high-performance waves that need size to work, Baby Reef shines when the ocean is quiet.
- Wind and season: This is primarily a wet-season break. The ideal conditions occur when the west or north-west winds blow offshore. During the dry season the wind is often onshore, though the shoulder months before and after the dry season can also offer excellent conditions.
- Swell size: This wave is best on a small swell. It is designed for fun, not fear. Once the swell gets bigger than head-high, the wave tends to close out and lose its shape.
- The tide: For the best shape and safety over the reef, aim for a mid-to-high tide.
- Crowds: Sanur spots are generally much less crowded than the Bukit. Baby Reef can get busy in the early morning with locals, but it usually calms down significantly from 9am onwards.
Safety and dangers at Baby Reef
While the name suggests a harmless wave, there are still factors to consider.
- The reef: Even though the wave is soft, you are surfing over a coral reef, so you must be comfortable with the idea of falling onto hard structure rather than sand.
- Boat access: Being 700 metres offshore means you are reliant on a boat. This complicates logistics compared with a beach break, as you cannot just walk in if you get tired or drift too far.
Access to Baby Reef
Access to Baby Reef is part of the charm. There is ample parking at Mertasari beach, and from there it is a short walk to the shoreline, where you can jump on a local boat (jukung) out to the lineup.
Can beginners surf Baby Reef?
Yes, but with a caveat. Baby Reef is ideal for developing beginners, those who have surfed a few times before and are comfortable surfing reef breaks. Complete beginners, though, should avoid this spot: the boat drop-off and the reef bottom complicate the learning process. If it is your very first time, or you are not confident paddling, you are much better off at a break with an easy paddle-out, such as the gentle waves at Baby Padang. Is Baby Reef good for intermediates?
Yes. For intermediates who are comfortable with reef breaks, this is a fantastic spot. The outside peaks offer green waves that are perfect for practising the fundamentals, such as the functional surfing stance and learning to turn on a high-volume board. It is a low-stress environment to improve your wave reading and trimming. With a local guide to handle the currents and boat logistics, Hyatt Reef, Sanur Reef, and Sindhu Right also become fantastic intermediate options, but strictly on a high tide with a small swell.
Local amenities in the Sanur area
Being in the heart of Sanur, the amenities here are abundant.
- The boardwalk: The path from Mertasari links all the way north to the Sanur ferry terminal, lined with an endless selection of cafes, surf shops, and restaurants.
- Services: You will find everything you need right on the beachfront, from board rentals to hotels.
Is Baby Reef worth surfing?
Baby Reef is the perfect playground for the surfer who wants to progress from the whitewater to green waves in a relaxed, scenic setting. It offers the thrill of a boat trip and the quality of a reef break, without the intimidation of Bali’s heavier waves. Because it is an offshore reef that relies on tides and boats, it is best experienced with someone who knows the ropes, so to hit the right tide and get the best boat price, join our Uluwatu surf camp and let our local team handle the logistics.
