- Wet Season (November-March)
For a long time, Serangan (formerly known as Turtle Island) was a secret spot near Sanur guarded by the few who knew how to find it. As the secret got out, it transformed into the epicentre of Bali’s wet-season surfing. Surfers from Kuta and Seminyak flocked here when the wet-season trade winds blew, creating a vibrant beach scene with local warungs lining the sand, a feel very similar to Black Stone in Nusa Dua today.

That golden era of beach hangouts ended in 2018, when the island was privatised for development and land access to the break was permanently closed. Today the warungs are gone, and Serangan is a boat-access-only destination, but its reputation as the wet-season saviour remains untouched. As a true swell magnet, it is the bread and butter for surfers staying in Kuta and Canggu, guaranteeing a rideable wave even on the smallest days.
Understanding the Serangan wave
Serangan is not a single perfect wave like Sanur Reef or Sindhu Left, but a vast coral platform made up of several shifting peaks that move as the tide changes. It generally handles swell up to 1.5 times overhead; any bigger, and the sections begin to lose their form and close out.
The main peak (south right-hander)
The most consistent action happens at the southern end of the reef.
- The wave: This peak picks up the most swell. It features a powerful, steep take-off that lets you get into the wave early, but it quickly softens, allowing for about two solid turns before running away from you.
- The ride: It is a high-performance wave that is punchy at the start and playful on the inside.
The north peak (the deceptive A-frame)
On the northern end, you will see what looks like a perfect A-frame peak.
- The reality: This peak always looks much better from the boat than it actually rides. The left looks like a beautiful peeling wall, but in reality it is often slow and mushy. The right is similar, soft and lacking the punch of the main peak.
- The strategy: Do not be fooled by the visual perfection; unless the swell is solid, you might find yourself bogging rail on a slow slope.
The middle section
Between the main right and the north A-frame lies a scattered zone of shifting peaks. The quality here varies wildly depending on the day, but it spreads the crowd out and offers plenty of opportunities if you are patient.
Best time and conditions at Serangan
Serangan is the definition of consistency.
- Season: This is the go-to spot during the wet season. When the trade winds blow from the west, Serangan is offshore and groomed.
- Swell: It is a magnet. Even when the rest of the island is flat, you will find a wave here.
- Tide: The wave works on all tides, but the sweet spot is a mid-tide.
- Low tide: The waves often close out or break too quickly.
- High tide: The wave tends to get fat and harder to catch.
Safety and dangers at Serangan
- Crowds: Because it is the most consistent spot in the wet season, it attracts the entire surfing population of Canggu and Kuta. The lineup can get packed.
- Shifting peaks: Because the peaks shift, the take-off zone is not always clear. This can lead to paddlers getting caught inside or collisions as people scramble for the same shifting ramp.
Access to Serangan (boat only)
Since the beach access closure in 2018, you cannot drive to the surf. You must take a boat.
- From Sanur: Catch a boat from Pantai Mertasari (the same departure point for Hyatt and Sanur Reef).
- From Benoa: You can also grab a boat from the north end of the Benoa Peninsula.
There are no longer warungs or amenities on the beach, so bring all your own water, wax, and snacks for the boat trip, as you will be out at sea for the duration of your session.
Can beginners surf Serangan?
No. Despite being popular with surf schools, Serangan is not suitable for genuine beginners. The lineup is one of the most crowded in Bali during the wet season, with hundreds of surfers competing for shifting peaks, making it chaotic and dangerous for those learning the basics. Beginners will find a much safer and more enjoyable experience at Baby Reef in Sanur or the gentle waves at Baby Padang in the Uluwatu area, where the crowds are manageable and the waves more predictable.
Is Serangan good for intermediates?
Yes. This is the best option in Sanur for intermediate surfers. The steep take-off, followed by a softer shoulder, provides the perfect canvas for practising bottom turns and cutbacks. Just be prepared to hustle for your waves in a busy lineup. With a local guide to handle the currents and boat logistics, Hyatt Reef, Sanur Reef, and Sindhu Right also become fantastic intermediate options, but strictly on a high tide with a small swell.
Is Serangan worth surfing?
Serangan is the reliable workhorse of Bali surfing. It might not offer the hollow barrels of Sanur Reef or the mechanical perfection of Uluwatu, but it guarantees a surfable, fun wave when everywhere else is blown out or flat. It is a swell magnet that saves surf trips.
