Located on the black sands of the East Coast, Klotok is a powerful right-hand point break that offers a taste of Hawaiian power without the pro-filled lineup at its famous neighbour, Keramas.

Download our free PDF guide to all 73 Bali surf spots to plan your trip around the right break for every tide, swell and wind.

It is widely considered the most intermediate-friendly wave in the region. Do not let that label fool you, though: this wave draws its energy directly from the deep Badung Strait, producing thumping sets that demand respect. With long rides, ample barrel sections, and high-performance walls, it is a favourite for those looking to step up their game in more powerful waves.

Understanding the Klotok wave

Klotok is a rock- and sand-bottomed right-hand point break that breaks with significant intensity.

  • The mechanics: The wave features an easier take-off than other East Coast spots, but it moves fast. You need to get to your feet and drive down the line immediately; otherwise, the wave will race past you.
  • The ride: Once you are locked in, you are treated to a plethora of turn sections and the occasional barrel as the wave reels across the point.
  • Power: Many compare the waves on this stretch of coast to Hawaii. Because the swell hits the reef from very deep water, the waves feel heavy and thumping. You need to be physically capable of handling a beating if you mistime a section.

Best time and conditions at Klotok

Like Keramas, Klotok is a versatile wave that holds size well.

  • Swell: It is surfable from small days right up to very large swells.
  • Tide: This wave is best surfed at mid-tide, when you have just enough water to slow the wave down but before the backwash develops.
    • Low tide: Can still get fun waves, but the wave tends to break in two sections, limiting the length of the ride. A lower tide works better at Klotok on a small swell.
    • High tide: As the tide gets too high, waves bounce off the walking path, creating backwash that degrades the wave quality.
    • Shore dump: Be aware that a short, heavy pound develops as the tide picks up, making entry and exit tricky.
  • Season and wind:
    • Wet season (Nov–Mar): This is the prime season. Mornings are often dead calm until late morning, when the side-shore winds kick in.
    • Dry season (the secret window): While usually blown out by onshore winds, if you watch the weather carefully for breaks in the trade winds, you can score this wave completely empty while everyone else is fighting for scraps on the West Coast.

Safety and dangers at Klotok

  • The “thump”: The power of the wave is the main hazard. It hits harder than your average Bali beach break.
  • Hot sand: This is a serious logistical issue. The black sand and pathway get incredibly hot, so hot that crossing from the wet sand to the parking lot can be painful. Bring sandals or run fast.
  • Parking security: Break-ins are common in the parking lot. The best strategy is to buy something from the local warungs; think of it as a small “security tax” to have someone watch your scooter.

Access to Klotok

To find the wave, park at the warung at Pantai Batu Tumpeng. From there, it is a walk to the surf point to the south.

Can beginners surf Klotok?

No. While it is intermediate-friendly, it is not for beginners. The wave moves too quickly, and the thumping power from the deep water can be overwhelming and dangerous for those learning to control their board. Beginners are far better suited to the protected waves at Baby Reef in Sanur or the gentle waves at Baby Padang in the Uluwatu area, where access is easier, there is no shorepound, and the pace of the wave is slower.

Is Klotok good for intermediates?

Yes. This is the best option for intermediate surfers on the East Coast who want to experience real power. While it is not as perfect as Jasri, it breaks nearly every day and lies much closer to major tourism areas and facilities. The take-off is easier than at Keramas, letting you get into the wave safely before navigating the fast sections. Like Cucukan and Ketewel, you must be a competent surfer who can generate speed down the line; if you just go straight, the wave will leave you behind.

Local amenities at Klotok

The area is quieter than the tourist hubs but is slowly developing.

  • Eat: The warung in the parking lot is slowly transitioning into a restaurant, offering a place to refuel. After a surf, head to the nearby Komune Resort at Keramas for lunch to soak up the vibes.
  • Vibe: Because it is farther from major accommodation, it is sometimes less crowded than other breaks, though surf schools from Canggu do bring groups here.

Is Klotok worth surfing?

Klotok is the perfect stepping stone for surfers wanting to graduate to heavy, high-performance waves. It offers the thrill of East Coast power with a slightly more forgiving entry fee than the pro-level spots nearby. The window of opportunity is small, though, due to the wind and tide sensitivity, so to make sure you arrive when it is firing and not backwashed, join our Uluwatu surf camp and let our local team time it for you.
