Intermediate surfers – Equipment and stance

How not to lose your board

Advice on what type of leash to buy and tips to not lose your board when surfing. For intermediate surfers riding bigger boards, a loose board in the line-up can be a hazard to others, so the right leash and a properly fitted rail saver are well worth getting right.

How to stand on the board correctly

An in-depth look at the issues caused by not standing on the board correctly. The answer is the functional stance — feet across the stringer, knees bent, weight centred and head held high — which gives you the balance and control to progress.

Intermediate Tips for Surfing in Uluwatu

These videos are tips to improve your riding of different types of waves. We start with a powerful, fast wave at Uluwatu, then a soft, slow-breaking wave. We will soon publish more tips on different wave types.

4 tips for powerful waves

1. Make the fast sections using the functional stance.
2. Look at the lip when the wave slows down.
3. Pivot on the trailing arm to make a bottom turn.
4. Top turn with arms wide open.

Arms over rails

This video shows the importance of the correct position of your arms, which are used for balance and control. The left arm controls the left rail and the right arm controls the right rail. This is the same for goofy or regular, frontside or backside.

5 tips for soft, slow-breaking waves

1. Compression.
2. Swing your leading arm.
3. Pivot on the cutback.
4. Look at the white water.
5. Ride into the white water.

If you are a beginner or intermediate surfer and you are looking to take your skills to the next level, we invite you to join our surf school at Uluwatu’s top surf camp, where we will teach you how to stand on the board correctly and how to steer and turn the surfboard.
