Wet Season (November-March)

Walking along the Sanur boardwalk, you might see a picture-perfect right-hander peeling just offshore, framed by bustling cafes and swimmers. This is Sindhu Right, also known as Tanjung Sari Right or by its somewhat intimidating local name, Belan Belan, which translates to “glass shards”.

It is a wave of two distinct personalities. On a high tide with a small swell, it is a playful, vibrant zone filled with local groms and smiling intermediates. But when the conditions align with a low tide and a solid pulse, it transforms into a serious, heavy barrel that rivals the best waves in Bali.

Understanding the Sindhu Right wave

Sindhu Right and Sindhu Left break much closer to shore than the other Sanur reefs, making for an extremely appealing setup that is easy to watch from the beach. The wave runs down a curved reef into a well-defined channel. In its structure, it is often compared to the fast walls of Impossibles in the Uluwatu area; it offers many fast sections that, on the right day, line up for an incredibly long ride (up to 200m). Like Impossibles, though, it can also be racy and sectiony if the conditions are not perfect.

Best time and conditions at Sindhu Right

To see Sindhu Right in all its glory, you need a large S–SW swell and north-westerly offshore winds, which are most likely to occur in the wet season. The character of the wave changes completely depending on the tide.

Expert mode (low to mid tide)

When a wet-season large swell aligns with a low to mid tide, this wave shows its true colours.

  • The wave: It stands up at the top of the reef and breaks into a clean barrel, driving quickly across a very shallow, sharp coral shelf.
  • The reality: It becomes a serious wave for experts only. The chance of hitting the reef on a perfect day like this is very high, which keeps the crowds thin.

Fun mode (high tide)

As the tide fills in, the wave becomes safer but slower.

  • The wave: The pace slows down considerably, allowing for a few turns before the wave runs off. The very last section often remains really fun, offering a couple of hits before dying out in the deep channel.
  • The trade-off: The higher the tide, the less hollow and makeable the barrel becomes; it tends to get a bit more sectiony.

Safety and dangers at Sindhu Right

The local name Belan Belan (“glass shards”) should tell you everything you need to know about the bottom here.

  • The reef: The coral is sharp and shallow. On low tides, this wave is high-consequence.
  • Intensity: When it is really on, the lineup is serious. However, because the wave is so intense and shallow, it rarely gets overly crowded.

Access to Sindhu Right

One of the biggest advantages of Sindhu Right is its proximity to land. It breaks much closer to shore than other Sanur breaks, such as Hyatt Reef or Sanur Reef. It is an easy paddle out through the channel, directly from the walking path.

Can beginners surf Sindhu Right?

No. While you will see local kids surfing here, the reef is named “glass shards” for a reason. Even on high tides, the sharp bottom makes it risky for those learning the basics. Beginners will find a much safer and more enjoyable experience at Baby Reef in Sanur or the gentle waves at Baby Padang in the Uluwatu area, where the crowds are manageable and the waves more predictable.

Is Sindhu Right good for intermediates?

Yes, in fun mode. On smaller swells (head-high and below) with a high tide, this is a fantastic wave for intermediates to hone their skills on a coral reef away from the crowds. The wave breaks softly, and you can enjoy turn sections without the fear of the shallow reef. It is a favourite for a sunset surf, sharing waves with laughing local kids. Do not paddle out on a low tide, though, unless you are a very good surfer. With a local guide to handle the currents and boat logistics, Serangan is another fantastic intermediate option nearby.

Local amenities and vibe at Sindhu Right

The setting at Sindhu beach is lovely. The boardwalk is lined with relaxed cafes where spectators can sip a Bintang and watch the action close up. The views are incredible, with stunning sunrises over Nusa Lembongan to the east and, if you are lucky, Mount Agung looming to the north.

Is Sindhu Right worth surfing?

Sindhu Right is a gem of the Sanur coastline. Whether you are an expert hunting shallow barrels on a low tide or an intermediate looking for a fun high-tide wall, it offers a world-class setup right in front of the cafes. Because the difference between a fun session and a reef-scraping disaster is often just one hour of tide movement, local knowledge is vital.
