Dry Season (April-October)

Sitting just across the channel from Playgrounds, Lacerations is the undisputed crown jewel of the Nusa Lembongan region. While its neighbour offers a friendly warmup, Lacerations is where the serious business happens. Our free PDF guide to all 73 Bali surf spots covers Lacerations and every other wave in Bali, mapped to the right tide, swell and wind.

This wave is a Jekyll and Hyde setup. On smaller days, it is a fun, rippable peak that invites you to crack the lip and do cutbacks. But when the swell pushes overhead, it transforms into a world-class, hollow beast. True to its intimidating name, it offers air-drop takeoffs into heavy, shallow tubes that are strictly for the brave and the skilled. If you want to watch the best surfers in the area put on a show, this is where you look.

Understanding the Lacerations Wave

Lacerations is a wave with two distinct faces, depending entirely on the swell size. When the swell picks up, it becomes a fast, heavy, and technical right-hander, and it is all about the barrel: expect a steep, air-drop takeoff straight into a square tube. It is not a long wave, but the intensity is unmatched in the area. It breaks over very shallow water and sharp coral, and is fast, powerful, and punishing if you make a mistake.

On smaller days, the personality changes completely. It becomes a fun, high-performance wave offering three or four good sections to hit the lip with speed, much like at Shipwrecks. Uniquely, smaller days can also open up a rideable left-hand section, giving goofy-footers a chance to enjoy the peak. As the name suggests, the reef here is razor-sharp — shallower than Playgrounds and demanding respect.

Best Time and Conditions at Lacerations

Just like its neighbours, Lacerations relies on the dry season trade winds and specific tides to work its magic. The south-east trade winds (April–October) are perfectly offshore here, grooming the barrels into pristine cylinders. This is strictly a mid-to-high tide wave — do not even think about surfing it on a low tide, as the reef is too shallow and dry.

Because this wave is so good, and so close to shore, it gets heavily crowded. Since all the reef breaks here are tide-dependent, everyone is forced to surf during the same mid-to-high tide window, and there is very little room to hide — the takeoff zone is small and competitive, and you will be fighting for position with locals and skilled travellers in a tight pack.

Safety and Dangers at Lacerations

The name “Lacerations” was not given by accident. The coral bottom is sharp, shallow, and living, and wipeouts here — especially on the air-drop takeoffs — often result in “reef tattoos.” The high performance level and small takeoff zone can lead to intense hassle and drop-ins, and strong tidal movements affect this break, pulling water through the channel.

Access to Lacerations

Access from Bali is via fast boat from Sanur, Serangan, or Padang Bai to Nusa Lembongan — Scoot Fast Cruises and Dream Beach Express are two of the more established operators, and the crossing typically takes 30–45 minutes. Lacerations is located further out than Playgrounds but is still accessible from the main beach (Lembongan Beach): it is a solid 20–25 minute paddle from the shore, so you need a decent level of fitness. Many surfers opt to hire a local boat for a drop-off instead, to save energy for the heavy waves.

Can Beginners Surf Lacerations?

No. Despite the fact that small days are mellower, the reef is simply too sharp and shallow for true beginners. The penalty for falling is getting cut on the coral. Beginners should stick to the sandy beach breaks on Bali or perhaps the softest days at Playgrounds under strict supervision.

Is Lacerations Good for Intermediates?

Yes, but strictly on small days. On a small swell and a high tide, Lacerations is a fantastic spot for intermediates to work on top turns and speed generation — it is punchy and fun. As soon as the swell approaches overhead, though, this wave is off-limits for intermediates. It becomes too fast, too powerful, and too technical. If you see barrels spitting, sit it out and watch the pros.

Local Amenities Near Lacerations

Lacerations breaks in front of the Jungutbatu Beach stretch, so most people watching or surfing it are staying somewhere along that strip. Yogi Beach Bungalows sits right at the quieter end of Jungutbatu Beach, facing the Shipwrecks and Lacerations line-up, with simple brick bungalows a short walk from the sand. Tropica Shipwrecks, a small walled compound of wooden pavilions around a plunge pool, is a short walk back from the beach and even names its rooms after the local breaks.

For watching the show, Oka 7’s deck and rooftop bar is the local favourite at sunset, when you can pick out surfers’ silhouettes in the barrel as the light drops behind the wave. Lembongan Reef Bungalow’s bar and restaurant is another solid option right on the beach. For a proper meal, head into Jungutbatu village for fresh seafood warungs, or book ahead at one of the beachfront restaurants along the strip.

Why Lacerations Is Lembongan’s Heavyweight Champion

Lacerations is the “heavyweight” champion of Nusa Lembongan. It offers the kind of square, spitting barrels that usually require a trip to the Mentawais, all within a short paddle of your hotel room.

Whether you are an expert hunting the tube of your life or an intermediate looking for a performance wall on a small day, timing is everything, and the tide window here is short. These are offshore breaks, so we run things a little differently here than on the Bukit mainland — we cannot offer walk-up lessons on the islands themselves, but we run guided day trips by boat from Sanur with one of our surf guides alongside you, and you are welcome to base yourself at Padang Padang Surf Camp on the Bukit before or after the crossing.
