Wet Season (November-March)

Black Stone is a reliable and versatile surf break in the reef breaks of the Nusa Dua area, on the other side of the isthmus that separates it from Mushroom Rock. It is one of Nusa Dua’s go-to spots in the rainy season and a favourite day-trip from our base in the Uluwatu area of the Bukit, thanks to the clean surroundings and relaxed feel.

As part of the ITDC zone, the grounds are immaculate, the beach is pristine, and the ocean is clean. Whether you are a beginner riding the whitewater or an advanced surfer working the steep face, Black Stone offers something for most levels when the conditions align.

Understanding Black Stone’s wedgy peak

The defining feature of Black Stone is the “bounce” from the island, which creates a peak with an interesting and challenging take-off.

  • The peak: The wave forms wedgy peaks, offering mostly lefts that can run for longer than expected, though there is also a short right-hander off the peak.
  • The take-off: The bounce from the rock makes the take-off steep and fast, requiring you to get to your feet quickly and your positioning to be correct.
  • Visuals: There is a vantage point before the headland where you can see both Black Stone and nearby Mushroom Rock at the same time, so, depending on the wind, you can check which spot is cleaner before paddling out.

Finding the best conditions at Black Stone

Black Stone is specific about its requirements. It does not hold big swells or high-period swells well, so local knowledge is key.

  • Ideal season: This is a wet-season spot in the Bali surf calendar (November–March).
  • Ideal tide (the golden rule): This is a mid-tide break.
    • Neap tides: Neap tides are the best time to surf here, as the tide stays at the optimal mid-level for much longer with less water moving.
    • Low tide (avoid): At low tide, the reef is exposed and the wave closes out, making it unsurfable.
    • High tide: At high tide, the wave often goes flat unless the swell is shoulder-high or above.
  • Swell period: The wave works best when the period is around 12 or 13 seconds. If the period is 14 seconds or more, the wave becomes wonky, and it is best to head to Mushroom Secrets nearby.
  • Swell size: It is best on small to medium swells.

Dangers of surfing Black Stone

While the beach is beautiful, the wave has power and specific hazards.

  • The “bounce”: The backwash from the island creates a steep, fast take-off that can catch surfers off guard.
  • Strong current: On bigger days, a strong current develops, making the spot very challenging.
  • Shallow reef: When the waves are overhead, the sections can become hollow and break over a shallow reef.

Our solution: With the tricky bounce and specific tide windows, having a guide helps. Book a session of our advanced surf guiding to be in the right spot at the right time.

Access and local vibes at Black Stone

Black Stone is easily accessible and offers a great atmosphere for a full day out.

  • The vibe: There are several local warungs between the parking area and the beach, offering a relaxed scene similar to the warungs above the beach at Balangan. It is a good place to hang out and have a break between sessions.
  • The grounds: Because it is located within the ITDC, the gardens are manicured and the beach is kept exceptionally clean.

Can beginners surf at Black Stone?

Yes. This is our go-to spot for beginners during the wet season.

When the swell is head-high and below, beginners can safely catch the whitewater on the inside. Additionally, about 50 metres south down the reef, towards the white-sand beach break at Mengiat, there is a separate spot that is suitable for beginners on a small swell. In the dry season, when Nusa Dua is onshore, our beginner groups surf the gentle waves at Baby Padang on the Bukit instead.

Is Black Stone good for intermediate surfers?

Yes. When the waves are head-high and under, this is great fun for intermediates. The steep take-off forces you to get to your feet quickly and generate speed down the line.

  • Pro tip: Intermediates are best suited to sitting on the inside, away from the main peak, where the wave is a bit more mellow without the intense bounce from the rock.

Is Black Stone good for advanced surfers?

Yes, but size matters. When the wave is shoulder-high and up, advanced surfers can work the steep sections, and when it gets overhead it becomes an advanced-only playground with hollow sections and steep drops.

Is Black Stone worth surfing?

Black Stone is a wet-season gem that offers the perfect day-trip package: clean beaches, an easy warung scene, and a versatile wave that can challenge experts or welcome beginners depending on the swell size. It is a spot where the manicured grounds of the ITDC meet the raw excitement of a wedgy, fast-breaking reef. Scoring it well comes down to timing: targeting those golden windows of mid-tide and neap tides while avoiding high-period swells.
