Why take surf lessons with Padang Padang Surf Camp?
You may be asking yourself, why even take surf lessons at all? While it is possible to learn to surf by yourself, it will take substantially more time to get to a level than you would if you took lessons. There’s also a high probability that you may be incorporating bad habits into your technique without ever realising it. We teach correct technique from the start so that bad habits don’t have the opportunity to form! Furthermore, learning to surf with the aid of an enthusiastic instructor and in a supportive group environment is simply more fun than learning alone.
We also do theory classes at the surf camp and regular photo review sessions where we analyse your surfing photos and advise on the correct technique. Our surfing photo reviews are conducted in a class room environment and allows us to explain the theoretical and practical aspects of surfing.
Padang Padang Surf Camp has taught countless of beginners how to surf and our instructors are highly experienced and qualified to Australian standards. What separates us from other surf schools and surf camps is that we are dedicated to surfing locations that are suitable for you. While others may be content with taking their students to the same breaks each and every day, we aren’t. We run a flexible surfing program designed to get the optimum surfing conditions on the day for your ability.

You may bring your own surf board or we will provide a board appropriate for you. Board hire is included when you take group surf lessons, private surf lessons or semi-private surf lessons. We have a vast array of surfboards available of all shapes and sizes including; shortboards, mini-mal’s, longboards, softboards and hardboards.

What happens in a typical beginner surf lesson?
Each lesson will begin on land with your surf instructor providing you with crucial information of the surf break such as where to paddle out most efficiently and where the rips/currents are (and how you can avoid them).
If you have never surfed before, then the first lesson will include instruction on the very basics of surfing to help you develop a solid foundation from which to grow upon. You will learn such things as; how to paddle, how to jump-up and how to catch waves. We aim to get all our students up and riding by the first lesson. As you progress you will be taught the proper techniques necessary to take your surfing to the next level such as; turning your surfboard, how to build speed and how to perform surfing manoeuvres.
Additionally the lessons can be tailored to specifically focus on areas of surfing that you want to improve upon.
We typically offer 2 surf sessions a day and this would usually be 1 session in morning and 1 session in afternoon or 2 morning sessions. Generally the sessions are between 1.5 and 2.0 hours long.
Beginner Surf Lesson Locations
Bali is the perfect place to learn to surf with a variety of different quality breaks to attend. Depending on the surfing conditions, the following are some of our favourite surf spots to take beginner surfers for a lesson:
- Padang Padang Rights
- Toro Toro
- Kuta Beach
What You Will Learn
We strive to get all of our surfers up and riding by the first session and by the end of a weeks course we hope to have transitioned from surfing the broken white water waves to riding unbroken (green) waves. You will also learn the following:
How to paddle correctly - one of the most telltale signs of a beginner surfer is that they paddle with poor technique and it is no coincidence that the best surfers are also the best paddlers. Being able to paddle efficiently will allow you to catch more waves, conserve evergy and prevent injuries.
How to select waves - understanding the ocean is a skill that will continually develop over time spent surfing. Being able to select the correct waves will greatly increase your chance of catching a wave
How to pop-up - having a good clean pop-up is an essential skill that every surfer should strive to achieve. The fabled pop-up (or jump-up) is commonly something beginners struggle with, but we will teach you the techniques necessary to master it
Correct surfing stance - a functional surfing stance is necessary if you are to succeed as a surfer. Many beginners stances are riddled with errors and you’ll learn not only what to do but also what not to do.
“I had never surfed before and by the end of my fourth lesson I was off the foam board and riding waves (albeit small ones!) on a fibreglass board, made possible by the excellent instructors, their attention to detail and sense of fun. The photo sessions in particular really helped me to improve - once you see on camera where you are making mistakes it hits home a lot quicker!”
“Couldn't have asked for a better, more professional group of instructors. These guys are magic. They're amazing at what they do. Both Monot and Sandi were so patient and helped me so much more than any other surfing instructors I've ever had.”
“I took 3 days of surf lessons with these guys and went from never surfing before to catching waves like a boss! (Or at least that’s how it felt ha!) The staff here are the friendliest guys around and their surf knowledge is almost godlike! They are try masters of the sport. Any level surfer would get so much out of spending time here. Everyone out at sea knows these guys as the oracles of the waves, they know all the perfect spots and when to go."
“I'm a complete beginner and yet the lessons and groups are arranged so well that I didn't feel out of my depth when most of the others were proficient surfing waves at Uluwatu! Christo and Monot are so patient instructors they deserve a medal. Absolutely recommend for anyone wanting to surf in Bali.”
