Pandawa is a heavy breaking advanced surf spot located on the south coast of Bali.

Pandawa is arguably the best wave on the South coast. If you are a regular footer then you may prefer Nyang Nyang or Green Bowls, but none of the surf spots on the south coast handle a west wind like Pandawa, or offer easier access to the break.

All the South coast spots pick up all the swell from any direction, and it is always bigger here than both the West coast and East coast. Most of the time the swell is more than big enough for Pandawa. Insider tip: If Pandawa looks too small or too crowded then walk about 300 metres East and you will find Gunung Payung. Gunung Payung picks up the most swell in Bali and is never flat.

Pandawa is located on the main road between Uluwatu and Nusa Dua. There is an old road and new road that both give very good access. This is a very popular tourist destination and there is an entrance fee to access the area.

For a long long time Pandawa was a cherished secret spot. but it all changed in around 2012 when they build the new road. In 2024 they built a new road from the beach restaurants to a new parking area which is conveniently located directly in front of the surf spot.

Pandawa surf spot information

Pandawa is a high performance powerful wave. While there is an occasional right hander, it is known as a left reef break and is very popular with goofie footers.

It is a shifty peak that is hard to read and complicated by there being a strong current and often a heavy crowd. The rights can look tempting but they break very fast and it can be a very hard paddle out after taking a wave. The left hander breaks into a channel and is more convenient for getting back to the line up with the current working in your favour if you make the wave into the inside section.

Insider tip: The current is very strong at low tide. It eases off considerably above 1.4 metres but on a higher tide the waves will be much less frequent on a small swell. On a tiny swell the wave can be very good at dead low tide but otherwise there is too much water moving and best to wait until mid-tide before venturing out.

It is easy to walk to the surf spot at low tide. The reef is flat and not sharp. If you time it well you can get into the line up very earily on a low-mid tide. On a higher tide it is a longer paddle to get to the surf break, and the current running on the inside works against you pushing you further along the beach. When you finally get to the peak, the current then works in the other direction again pushing you away from the take off zone! You need to be fit to surf Pandawa. If not already surf fit, a few sessions in the Pandawa current will get you in good paddling shape.

The channel is not just helpful for getting you back to the line up after a left-hander. It also breaks up the chop from a west wind. It may seem odd that the chop from a rip breaks up the chop from a local wind. Pandawa is unique in Bali in that respect. While there must be other surf spots with similar characteristic this is unique to Bali. This information is useful if the wind is 10 knot to 20 knot westerly as other spots on South coast will be blown out, but Pandawa can handle a medium strength wind.

In the dry season, the wind is mostly from the South East which Pandawa is very exposed to. Pandawa is mostly a rainy season surf spot.

Pandawa was known as Timbers back in the day when it was a secret spot, as the wave breaks noisily and heavy. It is best around head high to head high and a half. Around double overhead it starts maxing out and gets very heavy. There is very deep water offshore which means waves come in very fast and form up quickly. This is not a big wave spot and it is very challenging when it has some size. Set waves are quite difficult as the wave is lumpy and fast moving. It is best around head high and the waves can peel quite a long distance on the inside.

Pandawa is a powerful wave with heavy lip that throws the occasional barrel. It is mostly for advanced surfers but can be surfed by intermediates on a small swell if they are strong paddlers.

The main hazard at Pandawa is the heavy breaking nature of the wave and the current. The spot went viral back in 2023 when a Brazilian guy punched a female tourist. Even Kelly Slater got involved. Pandawa is not a localised spot. There was strong push back from the Brazilians who attempted to colonise – everyone is welcome to surf at Pandawa.

When is the best time to surf Pandawa?

Pandawa needs a small swell to work because it’s very exposed to all swell directions and there is deep water channel offshore which magnifies the swell. Also attracts bull sharks but there are no known shark attacks. It is a rain season wave that works best from October to April. From May to September is it very exposed to South East trade winds.

The best conditions occur during Northerly winds but this is very rare and mostly after rainfall. North East and North West wind is almost as good (cross offshore). West wind is handled well but a South West wind chops it up, as does a South East trade wind.

During medium size swells Pandwa will break at the very highest spring tides. It can be surfed at low tide but works better with a small swell at mid to high tide.

When the conditions are optimal at Pandawa, the wave breaks fast and powerfully for about 100 metres.

Can beginners surf Pandawa?

Pandawa is an advanced-level surf spot due to its fast, hollow waves and the strong current. It is surfable by intermediates on the smaller swells but need to be a strong paddler to handle the current and crowds.

Conclusion

Pandawa is an excellent spot in the right conditions but is often too big and in the dry season, it is mostly blown out by the trade winds. The left hander is a powerful wave and it is an excellent spot in the rainy season. October & November are the best months, as very often light winds and many other surf spots to choose from so the crowds are dispersed around the island.

Pandawa is not one of the most famous surf spots in Bali, but it is a swell magnet and a go to spot on a westerly wind with a small swell. During rainy season on a small swell it is often the best of all the Bukit surf breaks.
