Uluwatu’s Best Sunset Spots: Best vantage points for viewing sunsets and surfing
Uluwatu, a charming coastal paradise located in Bali, Indonesia, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant local culture, and world-class waves. As well as being home to arguably the best surf camp, Uluwatu is also home to some of the most awe-inspiring sunset spots in the world. The best of these look straight out over the line-up, so you can watch the evening session light up while you plan tomorrow’s surf. Let us explore the best sunset spots in Uluwatu: The Edge, Single Fin, Suarga, El Kabron, Dreamland Beach, La Terrazza and Bingin Beach. Prepare to be mesmerised as the sun dips beyond Bali’s waves and below the horizon.
The Edge
Let us begin with The Edge, a local gem aptly named as it sits right above the renowned Uluwatu surf break. Operated by Uluwatu’s iconic Billabong-sponsored local surfer, Made Lana — who helped us produce our own Uluwatu surf guide — this cosy bar is the ultimate spot for surfers looking for an epic sunset. The cliff here gives one of the best views anywhere of Outside Corner and The Peak, so on a big swell you can sit with a drink and watch the local chargers take off on waves that most surfers only ever watch from land. Enjoy the perfect balance of upbeat music and relaxed post-surf vibes, ideal for swapping stories after a session with top local surfers and surf instructors. The Edge is the ideal place to wrap up your day in Uluwatu.
Single Fin
Nestled atop the busy cliffside facing the surf break at Uluwatu and just above The Edge, Single Fin has grown into an iconic venue for friendly vibes and incredible views. It looks straight down the line at The Peak and The Racetrack, so as the light goes golden you can watch surfers racing to make the last waves of the day. Named after elements of surfboard design originating from the 1970s, the surfing vibes are ever-present, and it is the natural place to share what you learned during your advanced surf session.
Single Fin is open daily from 8am, staying open late on Wednesday and Sunday. The crowd builds for sunset from around 4:30pm, and the famous Sunday Session — live music from mid-afternoon followed by DJs — is the social ritual of the Bukit, where half the surfers on the peninsula end up by sundown. One word of advice from us: the cleanest, emptiest waves in the dry season come at first light, when the SE trade winds are at their lightest and blowing offshore, exactly as explained in our guide to Bali’s surfing conditions. A Single Fin Sunday is well worth it, but if you want to be sharp for the dawn patrol, pace yourself and do not let the session run away with you.
Suarga
For those looking to embrace the tranquillity of the moment, Suarga is the perfect haven. Situated atop a cliff overlooking Padang Padang, this eco-friendly boutique resort and its Dugong Lounge offer an intimate, serene setting to witness the sun setting over the Indian Ocean. For a surfer the view is the draw: you can see the barrels of Padang Padang to your left and the long walls of Impossibles to your right, so when the swell is pumping it is one of the best surf-watching seats in Uluwatu. On small swell days you can watch new surfers finding their feet during beginner surf lessons on the inside.
Find solace in the infinity pool or indulge in a drink as the vibrant colours of the sky unfold before your eyes. Suarga is a hidden gem that promises a serene and unforgettable sunset experience.
El Kabron
For those seeking a more upmarket party atmosphere, El Kabron offers an idyllic setting that is sure to leave you spellbound. Open since 2011, this iconic Spanish and Mediterranean cliffside beach club is famous for some of the best sunset views in the world, with a daily sunset show of saxophone, violin and DJs. From the clifftop you can watch the surf breaking at Padang Padang, Impossibles, Bingin and Dreamland with your drink of choice in hand. The seafood and paella are the standouts, and it is an excellent choice for dinner with friends or drinks by the infinity pool.
Great food, service, views and atmosphere combined with a perfect cliff-top vantage point over several of the area’s best waves make El Kabron one of the best sunset spots in Bali. Note that the Hedonism Lounge and pool are adults-only, so book the restaurant area if you are coming with family.
Dreamland Beach
When it comes to sunset magic in Uluwatu, Dreamland Beach delivers every single time. With its dramatic cliffs, long stretch of golden sand, turquoise waters, and captivating surf, it captures the essence of Bali’s raw coastal beauty. The waves here can be punchy and playful—a fun beach break for intermediate surfers looking to catch a few before the sun dips below the horizon. Even if you are not paddling out, watching surfers carve through the glassy evening sets is a show of its own. As the sun begins its descent, the entire beach glows, the cliffs turning rich amber and gold while the sky melts into pastel layers of pink, orange, and violet.
It is the kind of view that makes you pause, take a deep breath, and just be. There is a relaxed, social vibe — surfers wrapping up their session, couples lounging in the sand, and groups of friends gathering on the cliffside with cold drinks in hand. Dreamland welcomes everyone with a front-row seat to one of Bali’s best natural shows.
La Terrazza
Immerse yourself in the charm of La Terrazza Uluwatu, a hidden cliffside restaurant located facing the surf break at Uluwatu beach, so you can watch the waves peeling below while you eat. Enjoy authentic Italian cocktails like Aperol Spritz and Negroni, or explore a selection of exceptional drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. If you are in the mood for a snack to complement your drinks, try the Tagliere, which offers a selection of cold cuts, cheeses, and vegetables.
As the sun sets, stay for a delicious dinner featuring authentic Italian dishes, from crispy pizzas (our favourite is the 4 Formaggi), rich pastas and lasagnas to succulent meats and fresh seafood. La Terrazza offers an unforgettable dining experience that perfectly complements the sunset.
Bingin Beach
For a raw, local experience, head to the clifftop above Bingin. In July 2025 the cliffside warungs, cafés and surf shacks that once lined the beach were demolished by the authorities, so there are no longer facilities down on the sand — but the wave is completely unaffected and the clifftop remains a free public vantage point with one of the finest views on the Bukit. Bingin is one of the best low-tide barrels in the area, so as the tide drops into the evening you can sit up top and watch surfers pulling into tube after tube as the sky lights up. You will still find locals and surf instructors gathered on the cliff at sundown, sometimes with a guitar. Just bring everything you need and take your rubbish home, as there is nothing down there to buy now.
Uluwatu, with its majestic cliffs and unique venues, serves as a canvas for some of the world’s most breathtaking sunsets — and almost every one of them looks out over a world-class wave. From the raw surfer vibes at The Edge to the Sunday energy of Single Fin, the serene beauty of Suarga, the refined elegance of El Kabron, the Italian charm of La Terrazza and the local feel of Bingin and Dreamland, Uluwatu is sure to have something for everyone. Enjoy the sunset, soak up the surf culture — and remember that the cleanest waves of all are waiting for you at dawn.
